Book of the Month: “Rewiring Your Mind for AI”

This month, we’re reviewing “Rewiring Your Mind for AI” by David Wood. In this book, Dr. Wood shows us how to think differently to leverage the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI).

The book first sets us up to think in terms of growth mindsets instead of limiting mindsets – starting with some anecdotes about how calculators and Google changed the way people function. Dr. Wood shares some stories about the use of Google, for example: We used to ask colleagues how certain tasks could be done, or learned from an instructor how certain things could be accomplished. In this chapter, we’re reminded that in the late ’90s and early 2000s, we didn’t lean on Google. The term “Google it” was embraced by some, but it wasn’t the go-to for everyone. Thus, instead of “ask a friend,” the growth mindset was “Google it.” This sets the reader up to challenge the way they perceive the use of AI, and these thoughts and mindsets are continually challenged through the book, giving the reader an option to think about tasks differently.

Wood reminds us that AI is not a calculator: There is a difference between the deterministic nature of a calculator (1+1 will always equal 2) and the probabilistic nature of AI (giving the same prompt will not always yield the same result). This goes a long way in teaching the reader the stark difference of the AI tools available to consumers today. The nature of how we leverage AI tools today is not like the deterministic automated replacements of abacuses and a slide rule. This is really brought to bear with a discussion on hallucinations and their role in making generative AI more creative than a deterministic tool would.

What really resonated was the discussion on how AI tools enable folks to competitively complete tasks at a higher level of execution. This is an area where “Rewiring Your Mind for AI” really shines. The book tackles the belief that “using AI is cheating” and how to overcome that aspect, but also gives a framework to overcome the barrier between a junior level of execution of a task, and an journeyperson level of execution for a task. Dr. Wood is careful to point out too that a human-in-the-loop is necessary to ensure quality outcomes of AI.

For anyone eager to fully embrace the possibilities of generative AI, or for those standing at the threshold, uncertain how to take the next step, “Rewiring Your Mind for AI” provides both inspiration and practical guidance. Dr. Wood’s clear-eyed exploration of mindsets, coupled with actionable frameworks, makes this book an invaluable companion for demystifying AI and building confidence in its use. It’s a resource that empowers readers to transition from hesitant adopters to proficient AI collaborators, ensuring that technology becomes an ally rather than an obstacle. Whether you’re already incorporating AI into your daily work or seeking to overcome barriers to entry, this book paves the way for growth, creativity, and meaningful engagement with the tools that are shaping our future.
